Western Power / Attadale North State Underground Power Project

Western Power / North Fremantle Substation Distribution & Switchyard 66kV Upgrade

With Western Power undergoing upgrades to the North Fremantle Substation, Mainswest was contracted to assist in the scope of open excavation and installation of 630mm 11 kV XLPE Cable, 240mm 11kV XLPE Cable and HD Conduit to allow Western Power to connect the existing network into the new switchroom.

Due to the age and location of the substation, the project required close liaison with Western Power to prevent damages to existing underground cabling, uncovering unknown existing services and the excavation and removal of contaminated soil.

During the project Mainswest had provided assistance to Western Power in testing, locating and civil works required for Western Power to complete repairs on existing damaged networks outside the substation.

    Key Features
  • Open Excavation of Cable Trenches
  • Installation of 630mm 11kV XLPE cables from Switchroom to Transformers
  • Installation of Tri foil 240mm XLPE Cables from Switchroom to Cap Bank
  • Installation of 100mm HD Conduits
  • Backfilling, Tape and Compaction
  • Locate and Repair of Cable faults

Georgiou / Perth Waterfront – Freeway Lighting

Western Power / North Fremantle Substation Distribution & Switchyard 66kV Upgrade

The Elizabeth Quay project is the first step towards revitalising and reconnecting the city’s focus to the iconic Swan River and enhance Perth’s reputation as one of the most liveable cities in the world. The new waterfront will extend through to the steps of the city creating a seamless extension which can be enjoyed by locals and visitors. Covering nearly 10 hectares, Elizabeth Quay will create an experience that reflects the life and identity of Western Australia.

With the first stage well under way Mainswest has been appointed to the role of supplying, installing and maintaining the freeway floodlights and Pedestrian Lighting.

Due to the location of Elizabeth Quay and the emphasis on minimising the disruption to the public, the project required Mainswest to closely liaise with Georgiou Group in making sure that all lighting and switchboards were installed within a set schedule, which included integrating with the existing electrical system to an Australian and Mains Road standard.

Key Features

  • Installation of Floodlight Poles and Luminaires for the entry and exit freeway ramps.
  • Installation of pedestrian floodlight poles and luminaires
  • Installation and connection of new and existing distribution switchboards
  • Open excavation of cable and conduit trenches
  • Installation of conduits under freeway using directional drilling technology.
  • Installation and construction of concrete footings for lighting and switchboards.
  • Wiring, jointing and testing of all electrical cabling.

EC & M / FMG Site T155 Port Expansion Project

EC & M / FMG Site T155 Port Expansion Project

The FMG Site T155 Port Expansion Project was a project that delivered great opportunities of FMG along the Port Expansion in Port Hedland, which also delivered an awesome feat and a great opportunity for Mainswest which we are grateful to be invited by ECM to be a part of this project.

One major challenge that we were faced with, which was exciting to be part of, was the final cut over of the new 630mm single core cables to the existing live feeder cables. This consisted of 24 straight through joints to be carried out within the first of two 4 day shutdown periods.

The shutdown took place where we spiked each of the existing cable sets (red White & Blue) as we worked through the 24 inline joint took place, diverting each set to a suitable location / position to be inline straight jointed.  Once completed all testing and commissioning took place by ECM where the plant was energised achieving power to 9 substations, a major milestone.

We covered all scenario strictly covering tasks, work environment and risks ready for the shutdown. All Steps had to be taken to coincide with all procedure as well as maintaining our high priority value of zero harm and safety of the utmost importance for works to be carried out correctly managing all counts. This was achieved due to all work parties’ communicating together, with an outcome reached that was required to deliver this project.

The procedure was then repeated at a later stage of the project for the next 24 inline joints.

 Key Features

  • Mainswest and its high voltage team mobilised to site, taking on board the 110 plus 22kv cable termination and straight joints ranging from various cables sizes from 120mm 3/core XLPE SWA to 630mm single core cables addressing switchgear, stop end boxes and transformer apparatus
  • 48 x 630mm CU - High Voltage Inline Straight Joints at 22kv - XLPE - Aluminium Armouring PVC Sheathed with White Ant Protection
  • Cable Spiked each of the existing cable sets
